Joan Najbar sent a letter to her son Sam Eininger fighting in Iraq in 2006. A few days later the letter was written with a red colored stamp at the corner of it. The stamp just said “DECEASED”. However as Joan Najbar contacted Red Cross, she learned that the news was not correct and her son is alive.
Just a few weeks back Gordon Brown came under severe criticism for inadequate conditions provided to the allied soldiers. The emotions and feelings of a mom who has learnt that her son has died could never be imagined by someone who is not involved. Najbar had to wait for 24 hours before it was confirmed that the letter was returned as a result of sheer and brutal negligence by the authorities.
As Joan Najbar received the news that her son is alive, she determined to stop the event from happening again to some other mother and sued postal services. Amazingly postal services maintained that there is no negligence on their part. Not only that they remain stubborn in their claim, they never issued a single letter apologizing what has happened. Only thing I can conclude from the event is that torturing all those Iraqi POWs have numbed all human senses of the authorities appointed in Iraq.
The event like what happened to Najbar are not uncommon, there are many examples of criminal negligence.
Joan Najbar has now sued Federal Government for $118,000. If I had been at her place I would have added at least three more zeros to the figures. However I seriously doubt that the case would be able to awaken responsible authorities from their slumber.
