John Shepherd Barron gave an idea of self service cash machine and that is later named as ATM Machine. He got that idea while taking a bath as his bank made his payment too late. We can as well call him a father of ATM Machine. John Shepherd Barron gave this idea in the yr 1965.
The 1st ATM (automated teller machine) was established in Enfield, London, in the yr 1967. Reg Varney, who was one of the superstars of that time, was the 1st person who with drew the cash from ATM. The machine was functioned by a particular cheque issued by the bank and when you would insert it in the machine it would check the PIN code of that cheque and if it matches than it would allow you to with draw money through it. John Shepherd Barron, belonged from Portmahomack, passed away in Raigmore Hospital, on this sat. John Shepherd Barron didn’t sell out his idea and even didn’t make any money through his idea. Afterwards he was awarded by the Life Time Achievement Award by ATM Industry Association.
John Shepherd Barron became MD of De La Rue Instruments, which work is to print currencies and also stocks. He got married to C. Murray, the girl of Sir Kenneth, the early chairperson of the Royal Bank of Scotland and they both moved to his Easter Ross land when he got retirement. His family was consists of his wife, 3 sons and 6 grand-children. John Shepherd Barron was died in the age of 84.
