Karva Chauth is basically the event for the married women to pray to the lord Ganesha for the prosperity, long and trouble free life of their husbands. The basic events involved in the Karva Chauth are fasting, worshiping, and finally breaking the fasting while sighting the moon. Women dress-up themselves for the occasion by wear new clothes, jewelry and makeup. The event is basically celebrated on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik according to Hindu calendar.
Married ladies event is mostly practiced in India and some other parts of South Asia like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The community belongs to Hindu religion had the faith that by participating in this event, married ladies can gain security and prosperity for their husbands from lord Ganesha.
Lot many stories are around for the Karva Chaouth, but the most popular and known story explains how it begins.
A story of Karva (a devoted wife), whose husband was attacked by a crocodile and he died eventually, she trapped and bound the crocodile with a cotton yarn and asked Yama (the god) to treat the crocodile in the hell. Yama rejected her request. She threatened the Yama to nuisance the crocodile and Yama agreed to send the crocodile to the hell and did the same as he got afraid of the curse by the devoted wife.
When the Yama was taking Karva’s husband to the destination, she followed him and finally soft heartened Yama offered the Karva to ask for anything other than her husband’s life.
She asked Yama to bless her with the children. As she was a devoted wife, she wasn’t agree to involve any other man for her children, so Yama had no other choice to let her husband back to her and he did. So they lived happily ever after for many years.
On the day of Karva Chauth, the married women woke up early in the morning and have their food prepared by their mothers in laws before the sunrise. They avoid any food and drink during the whole day. The activities includes the decorating of hands, getting ready with complete makeup, Worship the gods and in the evening they wait for the moon to be come out, they saw the moon though water or with a cloth and pray from the moon for the long life for their husbands than they touched the feet of their husbands and ends up the fast by eating something.
Well, how auspicious this relation has been in all the religions of the world, most sensitive in the world and most strong in the hearts.
