Kevin Jennings was posted as the Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools by Obama administration in May, 2009. His appoint faced serious criticism from intellectuals, educators, and general public alike. Seems like, the matter is not settled yet. A recent editorial in a daily newspaper of Washington has raised the question about his Kevin Jennings’s credibility once again. But before talking about the editorial and the criticism, it is necessary to give brief introduction of the ‘controversial’ man:
Kevin Jennings has earned his university degrees from institutes as prestigious as Harvard. He has also attended Stern School of Business of New York University and Columbia University’s Teachers College. He is the founder of “Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network”, former Gay and Lesbian Independent School Teachers Network, in 1990. He is the author of six books on gay rights and their education and one of his writings has won Lambda Literary Award.
Kevin Jennings was born in Florida and was the youngest child in the family. His was born in a poor family and was raised in a community of rural people who hated African Americans and lesbians. He was once beaten by his classmates.
Kevin Jennings has always remained controversial for many activities. He once openly told that he supported a school boy who had sexual relationship with an older man whom he met at a bus station rest room. When appointed in the Education Department of US Government, many conservative groups opposed his posting for his controversial concepts.
