Kevin Smith was the center of attention for more than one and a half million fans when we was forced out of a Southwest Airlines. Kevin Smith was told that he was too fat to be flying on the Southwest flight as the concerned personnel from the Southwest Airlines said that it was a part of their policy for an overweight person to purchase two tickets because it would cause an inconvenience to the neighboring passengers if the overweight individual was seated next to them.
Kevin Smith said that he had bought two tickets and that he knew of this policy because he had traveled on the airline before but because he wanted to reach his destination earlier he had purchased a standby ticket and there was only one available at the time.
Kevin Smith says that the southwest airlines was incorrect in terming him ‘too fat’ because according to the policy there were two criterion under which a passenger must fall for him to be termed overweight. The first of the criteria was that the passenger must be able to pull down the arm rests without any discomfort and the second was that the passenger must be able to tie the seat belt without any extension provided. Under these two rules, Kevin Smith says that he did not classify as an overweight person.
The Southwest flight that Kevin Smith was ejected from was a trip from Oakland to Burbank in California. The Southwest Airlines reaction to the episode was that it was a genuine policy in no way related to additional revenue from the sales of extra seats. It said that the policy was created to provide maximum comfort to each passenger on the flight which would be affected if an overweight person was seated on one seat thereby encroaching on the space of the neighbor.
