Khorat Big Mouthed Frog is a sort of gecko with leopard-like streaks on its body. This is a fanged frog and eats insects and birds. The scientific name for thisKhorat big-mouthed frog is Limnonectes megastomias, discovered in the Mekong River located in Southeast Asia, last year.
According to the reports of International World Wildlife Fund (WWF), scientists discovered 163 new species including 100 plants, 28 new classes of fish, 18 new reptiles, 14 amphibians, 2 mammals and 1 bird species in the region. These species are an addition to the catalogue of other 1000 new species listed from 1997 to 2007.
Recent environmental studies showed that Greater Mekong region was gradually getting warmer. WWF researchers have notified and warned that the effects of upcoming environmental change, specially an increase in droughts and floods will cause the unavailability of freshwater. This consequently will be dangerous for these species because these environmental changes might not be favorable for these species to exist. Stuart Chapman, director of the WWF Greater Mekong Program said some species will be competent to adapt these forthcoming climate changes but most of them will not be able to survive among this varied weather, possibly resulting in extensive extinctions. Because of this changing climate, environmental problems such as rapid development and logging will surely increase in the region, where just 5% of natural surroundings remains, the report warned.
This big mouthed – fanged frog in eastern Thailand is an unusual discovery and is among the stars in the list of newly discovered species and Scientists consider that it uses its fangs during fight with other males.
