Just recently a few of the largest corporations in the world announced that their systems had been infiltrated by a virus which has come to be known as “Kneber Botnet.” The perpetrators behind this cyber crime have not as yet been identified though a command and control server has been located in Germany which allows the perpetrators to control the bundles of infected computers.
Kneber Botnet works in such a way that it collects important login credentials to financial systems that are based online and reports all the data back to the people responsible for setting the virus up. Kneber Botnet is also capable of hacking entire email systems and social networking sites. It is assumed that many Facebook, Yahoo and Hotmail accounts have been compromised by this virus already.
So far a total of seventy-five thousand computers have been infiltrated by Kneber Botnet in as many as two and a half thousand organizations. The internet security firm which goes by the name of NetWitness first came across the virus in the January when it was running some standard tests. Herndon which is another software security firm based in the state of Virginia said that after a more thorough investigation it was revealed that not only were the private organizations targeted by the virus but government systems had been compromised as well.
Herndon is of the view that the normal anti-virus protection softwares available in the market right now will not have the capacity to deal with the Kneber Botnet virus. Some of the organizations that were infiltrated by this virus are Juniper Networks, Cardinal Health and Paramount Pictures.
