“Knights of the golden circle” was made to topple the government of the U.S. The organization was a hidden association and was made to trigger the revolt in states where there was still slavery in practice. The members had to depose that they will do their utmost for the achievement of organization’s goal of creating a realm according to the golden circle.
It was spirit of the movements which used the tactics of “delay as barrier” for the accomplishment of their designs especially in Central America and Cuba from 1850 to 1857. When these movements couldn’t succeed, the pro-slavery knights who were becoming the impediment in the way towards eradication of slavery focused on the main purpose of the movement: ‘the dismantling of the union and continuance of slavery’. The secondary associations were termed as “Castles”.
Texas was the hub of dynamic movement for the attainment their objective of breaking up the union. The disloyal segments in the north joined with the movement of knights of the golden circle leading to a huge number of agitators against the union. The unionists received the “hidden messages” that the number of agitators has risen to the frightening figure and the “secret movement” will come to the surface and they will then know how many of them were actually part of the movement and they will ruin every infrastructure and other government properties and the brake down of the federation is just imminent.
The secret movement was pursuing the agenda of breaking the federation and converting states to independents one. Morgan’s attack in Indiana and Ohio was actually the advancement of the same agenda. It was expected that the alliance would rise to the occasion leading to revolution but no such thing happened.
