Jazz singer Lalah Hathaway was born in 1968. Her famous albums include “heaven knows”, “Baby Don’t cry” as her some early songs. Her father died when she was only tenth year of her age, it was presumed by the police that he committed suicide. When she was in 10th grade, she was in the news as a neophyte talented singer. “Inside the beat” was her first song which introduced her as a professional singer and impressed the music lovers. In 1990 she released her first album “Lalah Hathaway”.
Her singing style resembles her father. Her one song contained a note which continued for seventeen seconds. She had always been censured by her and her father’s fans for not singing her fathers songs. But she didn’t take the criticism seriously. She strongly believes in originality and discourages those producers who try to mould her within the purview of current trends of music indicating that how much is influenced by her “voice of the heart”.
Lalah Hathaway believes in herself and cannot put her “self” apart to become “best-fit” in the recent music trends. Despite the modern experimentation in the music and latest trends that usually force an artist to adapt to prevailing tendencies, her heritage from her father remains intact as she cannot disown and detach her father’s singing style which is deeply rooted in her blood.
Hathaway stated “I am his daughter and that’s the truth of who I am.” People often asked her about her feelings for her father and his songs. When she entered in a mature age to understand the strength of emotions that fans develop with their favorite singers, especially who are no more to sing, then she began to comprehend and feel the love the fans may have for their idols. She, like her father wants to continue the heritage of music for generations to come.
