Placido Domingo seems to hold the award for the longest standing ovation in history. As he sung Otello in Vienna her received some 101 curtain calls and people stood up to applaud, that went on for 80 minutes.
Placido Domingo has his name among music prodigies like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Born to Mexican parents his career took its start at an early age of 7. Mexico City has honored him by erecting his statue in the city. Familiar worldwide he has touched some phenomenal heights of fame. Started his operatic career with the role of Borsa in 1959. He was still in Mexico when he was offered his first major role as Alfredo. By then he had started gaining some international fame and he performed in America in 1961. He was made a member of the Hebrew National Opera in 1962 and remained in Israel till 1964. His first major performance in New York was in the role of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in 1965. From 1967 he started giving regular performances at the major operas worldwide. At about that time he started singing for each and every media be it T.V or films or recordings.
The event that flashed him as an Opera Conductor was his performance as opera conductor in New York City in 1973. 1987 was the year when he first sang Otello at La Scala. 1990’s concert became something of an international popularity and fame. The concert was conducted by his friend Zubin Mehta and he appeared with three other tenors Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti in Rome. The event was subsequently turned into CDs becoming worldwide best seller.
His auto biography has come out with the title of “My First Forty Years”.
