Marshall University plane crash is a true incident, which took place in 1970. The movie of 2006 titled as “We Are Marshall” it totally based on this incident. So it was also given such name because in this air crash whole football team of Marshal University died including staff, members, coaches and crew members. The air tragedy occurred on 14th of November, 1970; when “Southern Airways Flight 932” crashed after clipping the trees located on the west side of Tri-State Airport’s runway and impacting nose-first into a hollow. All seventy five people who were travelling on this plane died on the spot.
It was going to Kinston, North Carolina; where a game was scheduled between Marshall University and East Carolina University Pirates. This whole air tragedy was dramatized by “Warner Brothers” in their 2006 film “We Are Marshall”. Just one week before its nationwide release date; the film was released in Huntington. Several scenes include in this picture were filmed in all over Huntington and on the campus.
There were great faces casted in “We Are Marshall” including Matthew Fox as Red Dawson, Matthew McConughey as Coach Jack Lengyel, David Strathairn as Donald Dedmon, January Jones as Carol Dawso, Anthony Mackie as Nate Ruffin, Ian McShane as Paul Griffin and Kate Mara as Annie. Matthew McConaughey, who is playing the role of Coach, is well known for his work in “Contact”, “A Time to kill”, “U-571” and newly “Ghost of Girlfriend Past”.
