Max Baucus, the chairperson of Senate Finance Committee, recommends his girlfriend for the post of U.S. attorney and has suggested that the White House nominate Melodee Hanes for this post. Melodee Hanes had remained his state director as well as love interest.
Max Baucus, a Democrat from Montana, has remained involved in a romantic relationship with Melodee Hanes after he got separated from his wife. The Montana Democrat has remained romantically involved with Hanes since 2008 and has nominated her for the post earlier this year as which she refused because of her other commitments.
Max Baucus is a Senate leader and a strong supporter of the new health care reforms bill presented by the Democrats. He sent six-names for review and out of them three were selected for recommendation from a third-party reviewer. The three names included Ms. Hanes and two others and the recommendations were sent to White House. Baucus’s spokesman told the press that these names have been recommended without any ranking and the decision is solely in the hands of President. The spokesman says that the Senate leader has made those recommendations on the basis of their qualifications. The incident is revealed by a newspaper which reported the news on Friday night. Though Melodee Hanes withdrew her name from the recommendations, the incident can call an action against Max Baucus from the Ethics Committee as he tried to give a top post to her love interest. Senator Baucus’ spokesman denies all such allegations and says that Hanes was recommended only because she was ‘supremely’ qualified. A detailed resume of Ms. Hanes have also been revealed from the senator’s office.
Baucus’ relationship with Hanes began in the summer of 2008. Hanes joined Baucus’ staff as his field director in 2003. She is currently posted on the position of acting deputy administrator for policy in Justice Department.
President Obama chose Michael Cotter for the position of U.S. Attorney.
