Thousands of local residents have been evacuated as Mayon volcano oozes lava.
It has been reported that the local villagers may have to spend their Christmas in evacuation center as they have been evacuated after Mayon volcano started oozing lava and shots of ashes and fumes on Tuesday night.
The governor of the Albay province, Joey Salceda, put the Albay province under alert and called it under the ‘state of imminent disaster’ to draw emergency services and funds. The local volcanologists alerted the residents who lives around the Mayon volcano on Monday night as the orange lava started trickling down the mountain. The authorities started evacuating villagers from the area which falls in the 8 miles radius around the Mayon volcano as it may erupt anytime. More than 20,000 villagers were evacuated before dawn on Tuesday while evacuation activities are still in process.
A population of 50,000 people is residing in the villages located around the Mayon volcano. More than 20 vehicles were sent in the first trip to the villages to relocate men, women, and children in safe places. Evacuees are sent to schools and other temporary residencies. Army trucks, in addition to other vehicles, are being used to evacuate people.
Authorities are afraid that the villagers may need to be kept in the temporary residencies for several days. The emergency management official of Albay says that they cannot let the people go to their houses unless the volcanic activity in the Mayon volcano does not slow down. Some locals who are living in farming communities near the Mayon volcano has packed their clothes but have not left the area yet. They says they’re not ‘very alarmed’ about the volcanic eruption.
Locals are used to such evacuations as the Mayon volcano often erupts ashes. It was last erupted in 2006 and more than 30,000 people were relocated.
Mayon volcano is an active volcano which is located in the Albay province of Philippines. It is one of the most active volcanoes of Philippines and has erupted more than 49 times in last 100 years. Several warnings were generated during the months of July and August in 2006 as the volcanologists noted volcanic activities in the Mount Mayon Volcano.
Mayon Volcano is included in the Pacific Ring of Fire where volcanic activity and earthquakes are very common.
