The incident was first reported by Main Justice which deals with the Justice Department on Friday night.
Melodee Hanes was one of the three nominees which were recommended by her lover, Senator Max Baucus, for the post of U.S. attorney.
Three nominations were recommended by the senator to White House in March 2009.
According to the details, Senator Max Baucus sent a list of six nominations to a third party for reviewing. The third-party reviewer chose three of them which were then recommended to President Obama. The report of Main Justice discloses that Melodee Hanes, the love interest of Max Baucus, was included in the recommended list.
A statement about the report has been released by Senator Max Baucus’ office. Senator’s spokesperson says that the recommendations were solely based upon qualifications and the criterion of selection was who would serve Montana better. Ty Matsdorf, senator Max Baucus spokesperson, says that no other intentions were involved in the recommendations. A lengthy resume of Melodee Hanes has also been released from the Senator’s office to prove that she was recommended for her qualifications.
Though Senator’s intentions are not clear, the Ethics Committee can take an action against him for the incident.
Senator Max Baucus and Melodee Hanes have been in a relationship since summer 2008 after Baucus got a separation from his wife. Melodee Hanes joined his office as field director in 2003 and was promoted to the position of state director in 2005. She is currently working as active deputy administrator for policy in Justice Department.
President Obama chose Michael Cotter for the post of US attorney.
