Mermaid syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by both legs being joined at the time of birth. The joined legs result in a malformed uro-genital system. Excretory and reproductive organs are either absent or malformed. The medical term for the disorder is Sirenomelia, the disorder is extremely rare. A few famous cases in history are as following:
Milagros Cerrón : A native of Peru Milagros was born with the condition “Mermaid Syndrome”. The condition meant that she was unable to urinate or pass stool. Without a surgery, there was no chance that she could survive. A surgery was planned to separate her legs in three phases. Further surgeries would be needed to construct her urinary and genital organs.
Tiffany Yorks : Tiffany is from America. The surgery to separate her legs was performed when she was 26. She is still not able to walk properly.
Mermaid Girl, Shiloh Pepin : The most recent case of Mermaid Syndrome. Not only were Shiloh’s legs joined together when she born, both the legs shared crucial blood supplying arteries. The condition meant that there was no way to separate her legs apart. With the hopes to separate Shiloh’s legs crashed , doctors gave only a few days before she would be dead.
Operations were performed to transplant kidney in her body twice. Transplanted kidney provided her much needed toxic waste removal organ. She went on to live for 10 years. She was diagnosed with common cold earlier this month but the disease progressed into a severe form of pneumonia, causing her death on 23rd October, 2009.
