In 2009, Perseids are the biggest victims of moonlight which hinders the visibility of the meteor shower .Meteor showers in last year couldn’t be seen easily because of moonlight. Last year people could see a very short interval of visibility of Perseids and there were very few sky-watchers as well.
In October, the Orionids started to make them visible with an increasing trend. It was anticipated that a little emission of Leonids will occur and it did occur. Many sky-watchers were of the view that many Geminids will be visible despite the haze of moonlight.
Now November 17th and 18th are the nights of meteor shower of Leonids. The Leonids are considered as one of those meteors that can be easily seen. When Leonid shower is on its boom, it generates almost 40 meteors per hour. The shower of Leonids also has 33- year cycle as well when the rate of showering is enhanced to hundreds of meteors per hour but this happens every 33 years only and this type of shower occurred in 2001.
The Leonids shower will attain the maximum rate on November 17th and 18th. The most interesting and good news for the sky-watchers is that there will be no moonlight hindrance on these nights. The whole range of showers has stared from 13th of November and will continue until 20th of November. In other nights of the ‘November showering period ‘except 17th and 18th, the meteors can be seen at lower rate.
If you want to experience the sensation of meteor shower, you should focus on the constellation Leo on the sky and the best time to watch is after midnight.
