Heroin story is a complex one with dirty games of politics, social issues and intelligence agencies involved, each having its own agenda to push. Afghanistan is the biggest poppy producer of the world and it is not some secret clandestine operation being done in high security underground facilities. As U.S invaded Afghanistan, the forces were very well aware of the poppy problem and the funding Taliban were getting by selling it. President Hamid Karzai’s (aka puppet president) own brother has one of the largest poppy plantations. With Bush Administration’s unique way of dealing the issues, the problem was totally ignored, Result – Heroin addicts grew exponentially in Russia with the entire heroin being siphoned from neighboring Afghanistan. The border between Russian and Afghanistan consists of one of the toughest of world’s terrains making it impossible to patrol and cover whole the border 24/7/365. With almost 1 Million HIV positive cases in Russia, the biggest culprit behind the epidemic is used rigs to inject the drug. As three days conference on AIDS ended on 28th October 2009 in Moscow, experts urged Russia to legalize the drug Methadone to control the problem. Methadone is opioid (like heroin) but with lesser abuse potential.
Methadone is not a legal drug in Russia. Experts expressed their deep concern that Russian authorities are not considering to legalize methadone as it is one of the most promising options to treat heroin addiction.
When Russian health authorities were probed, they were of the view that Methadone is just another substance with no scientific data to prove that it reduces heroin craving.
AIDS/HIV is an issue that Russian society has still not been able to deal with. The problem is like underground volcanic activity that goes on under the surface while on the outside everything is seen as normal ……. until it erupts.
