Michelle Cawthra a 32-year-old ex-supervisor of Colorado department of Revenue who stole more than $10 million from the states unclaimed tax refunds said love for her former boyfriend made her do that. This week in Denver, Colorado her former boyfriend is charged for theft, cyber crimes, forgery and racketeering and is on trial.
Michelle Cawthra testified against her former boyfriend Hysear Randell on Wednesday telling jury that she put unclaimed tax refunds in his ex-boyfriends bank account over the period of 2-years by faking documents and making bogus businesses, she also said that she recurrently used her co-workers computer password, so that she would not be identified.
Hysear Randell 42, is married and is facing the charges of theft, forgery, cyber crimes and racketeering, he is also charged for using the unclaimed tax refund money to pay for land deals, antisocial child support and to buy jewelry, new vehicles and trade schemes.
However, Michelle Cawthra in her testimony said that she did not benefit from the stole money, apart from some trips and jewelry.
Randell’s defense lawyer Scott Reisch said that his client thought that the money he was receiving from Michelle Cawthra was from her family trust funds. He also said that Michelle Cawthra used the money to allure and tried to take away his client from his wife.
Wife of Hysear Randell “Trudy” is also charged of assisting her husband to create fake bank accounts for his scheme, therefore she is plead guilty for theft however, she her verdict is pending. Michelle Cawthra, has been serving a 24-year sentence after she was found guilty for racketeering.
