Million Dollar Mermaid is a biographical film based on the legendary character of Annette Kellerman. Annette Kellerman’s character was played by Esther Williams Million Dollar Mermaid is one the best Hollywood’s Biographical movies. Nominated for Oscar, the role played by Esther Williams is considered one of the best of her career.
Film tracks Kellerman’s career from her childhood. Having a disease affecting her lower limbs she was given painful steel braces to wear to avoid disability. Her mother encouraged her to learn swimming to strengthen her limbs. By the age of 13 she was totally cured. At the age of 15 she won her first swimming competition. The film was released in 1953and in U.K the movie was released with the title “The One Piece Bathing Suit”. Million Dollar Mermaid was directed by “Mervyn LeRoy”.
Annette Kellerman went on to become an actress of acclaim. She also appeared completely nude in 1916 silent movie the “Daughter of the Gods”. The film shows the swimmer making world record in women’s 100 yards races. The film regards her being arrested in Boston in front of a crowd of people was a farce and was arranged to enhance the popularity of Annette. She went on to claim high laurels for her synchronized swimming acts. The event also helped to launch her career in movies.
Victor Mature played the role of Kellerman’s promoter, fall in love with the actress and then both got married. The drama in the film is created by a conflict between Kellerman and her husband and climax is the act in which the differences are reconciled and they are united again.
As much as the movie Million Dollar Mermaid successfully portrays the life of Kellerman, Esther Williams has done an excellent job being a pro swimmer herself.
