Napalm girl- the title of the picture of a nine years old, Vietnamese, naked girl who running through the street, suffering from napalm burns. Somebody said, “War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it”, the picture of this naked, young Napalm girl, has become one of the most unforgettable and heart-rendered images of the war.
Nick Ut, an Associated Press photographer, has won Pulitzer Prize for this photo. This Napalm girl, Kim Phuc Phan Thai, is now 46 years old and lives in Canada, serving to inspire burn patients. She spoke of her tribulation recently at a conference of burn survivors and burn care specialists in New York City, she had suffered decade’s long physical and psychological torture but she has strong will power and firm belief on herself. She recalls that sixty-five percent of her body got burned and sheared off every layer of skin on her back and left arm having everlasting scars and chronic pain and she underwent approximately 17 operations.
Phuc has come far with her believes and now she is a public speaker, an active peace activist, United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, child welfare advocate, married mother of two, and a worldwide inspiring symbol to burn injury survivors.
This iconic picture of Vietnam War could be a symbol of cruelty of war but there is a need to maintain peace, war, after all not as good to be repeated.
