Road closures, cancelled flights – white Christmas brings headache to residents in Nebraska, Iowa, and Dakota.
The nation celebrated a white Christmas as the most of the states were covered with snow. Holiday travels become difficult due to road closures of interstate highways in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Texas. The National Weather Service has warned the residents of these states for more winter snow storms in next few weeks.
A powerful snow storm took over the states of Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, and South Dakota and dropped almost two feet of snow during Christmas. Blizzard conditions were observed in Texas, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. North Carolina and other states including New York were warned of snow and rain over the weekend.
Power Outages and Poor Weather
While Christmas Eve is considered one of the most busy days for shopping malls, the shopkeepers reported that the business was down this year due to poor weather conditions. Road closures due to accumulated snow made travel difficult. In many regions, the prospects of power outages were increased due to severe snowstorms. Downed utility lines, extreme weather conditions, and cancelled flights caused headache to travelers and residents alike.
Road Closures Due to Snowy Weather
Weather forecasters have reported road closures on various Interstate highways including Interstate 70, 80, and 81 along the East Coast. In many states, snow plows and trucks were used to clear streets and improve closed roads but it was of no use. The transport department predicted road closures in these states during Christmas. National Guards remained alert on the Interstate Highways in Nebraska and South Dakota to help the stranded travelers.
Cancelled Flights and Airports Closures
Due to snowstorms, the passengers faced delays or cancellation of flights in Nebraska and Iowa. Oklahoma city airport was closed completely on Thursday.
The snowstorms has caused many causalities. At least a dozen deaths have been reported since the storms started.
