As a teenager with loaded gun was found near Newark Memorial High School, whole was cordoned off by police on Wednesday. The teenager was among a group of 4 or 5 juveniles. As the police arrived the group scattered and some of them ran towards the campus are prompting the police to shut down the whole school.
The action caused a disruption in schedule of students awaiting to be taken to home. The school remained seal for almost 4 hours in which the SWAT teams searched the school on room to room basis suspecting more weapons. As the tension eased police addressed the parents who have gathered outside the school that there was no threat of shooting to take place and searching / sealing of the area was a precautionary measure.
Students inside the school were able to communicate with their parents and others outside via text messages and messages on social networking sites. The messages showed hungry students being shut up inside the class rooms.
All the suspects were apprehended except one, who remains absconding. At about 3 p.m. students were allowed to leave the school premises in small groups before gathering them in school gymnasium.
Police stressed that nobody was hurt and no bullets were fired by the suspects. A few parents and students were provided on spot medical care for minor problems which were not related to the incident.
