From the above Nikumaroro islands present a strange picture. A bacterium type shape, the boundary of the islands is seen as a light green demarcation and beyond that again watery stretch. In fact the green line is thick growth of plants and trees and the watery blob inside is a lagoon. A pristine beauty with the beasts in the shape of gigantic coconut crabs. Nikumaroro has hit the headlines because of the famed female pilot named Amelia Earhart. Amelia went missing in her bid to fly around the world in a plane.
Researchers say that Nikamaroro is the place where she would have landed. The theory is that she would have to bring their plane to earth for the reason that there might have been some defect forcing them to do so or simply Amelia Earhart and her fellow Noonan had run out of fuel.
Having said that, the search for the remains of Amelia Earhart and her plane has a long history, twists and turns. There are many locations postulated to be the places where her plane would have landed. However Nokumaroro carries the best bet.
The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) is on the forefront of the search. In 1940 some bones were found including a skull by a British soldier. The bones are thought to be that of Amelia Earhart’s. The bones since then have been missing.
Discovery of female shoes, and a sextant box has given a boost to the hopes. The number of the sextant box is consistent with that carried by Amelia.
So where has her and her companion’ remains gone. The best guess is that giant coconut crabs made the remains there food. There still is slight chance that the remains of bones could be found in their nests.
