Nocturia refers to the condition where a patient has to wake up many times in the night to pass urine. Nocturia often occurs in the elderly patients, however people of younger age may experience the condition due to excess intake of liquids or by the action of stimulants usually caffeine from coffee, tea or cola drinks especially Mountain Dew™, which has highest caffeine contents. However if the above causes are not present, nocturia may be an indication of serious underlying disease like Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Enlarged Prostate or Renal insufficiency.
In a normal person changes in different ionic concentrations and hormone levels, reduce the urine output in the night, however if the balance is disturbed for any number of causes Nocturia results in. A medical practitioner usually prescribes a few medical tests before making any decisions. The tests include urinalysis to rule out the possibility of STIs and UTIs. Then the urine output is measured coupled with ultrasound examination to check how much urine is retained in the bladder.
There are number of pharmacological interventions available to treat the condition. First in the line are anticholinergic medications. Anticholinergic medicines treat the over active bladder muscle. Level of Vasopressin hormone in the body regulates the production of urine by the kidneys. Decompression is an analog of the hormone. It is given as a short treatment of Nocturia or even for the treatment of involuntary bed wetting during sleep. The best way to use the medication is to take the medicine for some period and then wean off it and then restart if necessary.
