President Obama’s Copenhagen speech draws criticism.
A mixed response is being made by international and national leaders on President Obama’s speech in Copenhagen Climate Summit.
President Obama Copenhagen Speech – The Content
US President Obama started with a brief introduction of the steps his government and people have taken to protect the climate and earth’s environment. He mentioned the increased number of energy efficient homes and industries. He also mentioned that investments are being made to generate renewable energy resources. Obama Copenhagen Speech stated that these minor steps are ambitious and said that these steps would help America to deal with dangers associated with Climate changes.
The important part of President Obama’s speech in which he urged the need to reach a ‘global accord’. He urged the leaders to meet their national goals of cutting on carbon emissions. He expressed his hopes that America will achieve its goal to cut emissions by 17% in 2020. President Obama also urged the need of exchanging information among each other to make sure that every country is fulfilling their commitments.
In the final part of Obama Copenhagen Speech, President Obama said that it is important for the nations to move forward together for a ‘common purpose’. He urged the need to define a process, which is to be followed by every nation, to reduce the activities which have endangered our environment.
President Obama’s Copenhagen speech was received with a mixed response. Some analysts called President’s Obama Copenhagen Speech completely contradicting with him while others encouraged his remarks. Commenting on President Obama’s Copenhagen speech, WWF President said that he has put some targets to cut on emissions and has expressed a strong willingness to fulfill his commitments. He says both the points are critical for ‘final deal’ but called it insufficient. Erich Pica, US President of Friends of the Earth, called President Obama’s Copenhagen speech ‘empty’.
President Obama offered no new targets by America to cut on emissions. It is important to mention here that US is the second largest greenhouse emitter in the world.
More than 193 countries participated in the Copenhagen Climate Summit which was held from December 7 till December 18 in the Danish capital.
