Marking the first time ever for the province of British Columbia to host the winter Olympics, the Olympics opening ceremony which will take place today, the 12th of February 2010, is going to be a moment and event to remember for the population of Canada.
Contestants from over 80 countries will be making an appearance in this years game and Pakistan will make its first ever appearance as well, coming to contest in the alpine skiing event. The Olympics opening ceremony will mark the beginning of a sixteen day period which will see events at two locations in the province of British Columbia. Richmond which is a city based in the suburbs of Vancouver will be assisted and joined by the resort town of Whistler in hosting the main events.
A total of five hundred and eighty million dollars of the tax payers money will be used in the efforts of renovation of the major venues for the games. Though it is the first time for Vancouver to see such an event, the Olympic games have come to Canada two times before in its history, the first being in the annum 1976 while the latter coming just twelve years later in the annum 1988.
The Olympics opening ceremony will not be influenced by the politics of the Harper government as any veto powers that it might have been thought to hold have been taken away from it. When the government mentioned its intention to fund the Olympics opening ceremony in order to gain control over what content is displayed it had caused a great stir amongst certain groups who claimed it to be an attempt by the government to interfere in matters of exercise and art.
