Oscar Grant was an African-American man; he was shot dead by a Bay Area Rapid Transmit police officer. This incident happened on the 1st of January, 2009. When everyone was busy celebrating the New Year Oscar Grant’s life came to an end. The BART police was told about a fight in the Fruitvale railway station, the cops reached the station and all most all of the people at the station were detained, Oscar Grant was also present at the station and he was one of the detainees at the station, just when Grant was being handcuffed by a police personnel another police officer shot Grant and the bullet shot from the officer’s gun proved to be fatal for the young man. Grant was resisting his arrest while the officers were trying to take control of him. Johannes Mehserle shot Grant at his back, when the officer shot Grant; he shouted that you shot me! After this incident the Oakland became target of riots full of violence. The event was caught by the cameras of many cell phones, digital cameras etc. the video was uploaded on Youtube and this caused racist riots to break out and thousands of people came on the roads and started protest against the murder of Grant. The officer was then arrested and brought to the court for a trial, he was charged for the murder of an unarmed and innocent civilian, the officer claimed in court that he intentionally did not kill Oscar Grant and he had nothing personal to do with him. There are still chances of riots in Oakland.
