Nathan Pritikin called his diet plan as,” mankind’s original meal plan.” It is because the focus of Pritikin diet is on not at all or minimally processed foods with lots of fiber in them. Pritikin diet incorporates lots of vegetables, grains and fruits, while avoiding fats. The diet plan primarily helps the heart health and diabetic patients. Weight reduction is an extra benefit of the Pritikin plan.
1980’s saw many Diet plans like Atkins, Scarsdale Diet and Gary Null, Pritikin rises above all of them. Pritikin plan does not consist of diet alone. It also emphasizes physical exercise.
The best thing about Pritikin is that it is not all hype, several scientific studies have verified the Pritikin claims.
- A meta-analysis of 864 type 2 diabetics analyzed and verified the Pritikin claims. Around 74% became medicine free and 44% got rid of injecting insulin into their bodies with Blood Sugar level well in control. (Roberts, Christian., and Barnard, R. James. - The same study showed that 55% hypertensive patients no longer needed medications after three weeks of starting the protocol.
- In 2005 UCLA researchers proved in another study that the Pritikin protocol helped obese children lose their weight and normalize the blood cholesterol levels. The same study showed the improvement in other parameterss like insulin, triglycerides, blood sugar levels, and C-reactive protein.
