The Antarctic Region “Queen Maud Land” consists of sub regions, Prinsesse Astrid Kyst, Olav Kyst Kong, Kronprinsesse Märtha Kyst, Prinsesse Ragnhild Kyst, Prins Harald Kyst Kronprins, and Haakon VII Vidde. Queen Maud Land hosts research centers of different countries like Japan, Sweden, South Africa, Germany and India. The co-ordinates of Queen Maude Land on the map are 20° W and 44°38\’ E. The area was named Queen Maud Land after the name of a Norwegian Queen as the region was first reported by a Norwegian team in 1930. As the area was discovered a conflict arose between Germany and Norway on the ownership. However as of now the land does not belong to any single country. There is some conflict about the strict boundaries of the region.
Queen Maude Land looks like a landscape painted by an artist. Serene white sheets of snow dotted by the mountains. Queen Maud Land offers unique opportunities to observe the nature closely. Indian Research Station Maitri is located in an area called Schirmacher Oasis. The area is unique as it is not covered by ice fully.
A runway has been constructed to facilitate the aircrafts carrying research teams and equipment to Queen Maud Land. It has also enabled common visitors to have a look at the Antarctic region. The runway which is closer to the base of Russian Researchers is the primary gateway into the Queen Maud Land.
The aerial photography of the region, large ice sheets can be seen breaking off from the main region and floating in the ocean.
