Rissi Palmer is an African-American country singer – a rare African-American singer in this genre. Though she is the only black woman in this genre of music, many people believe that she must be discouraged by other musicians. But Rissi denied the rumors. Talking to a news papers, Rissi told that no body in the music industry had showed her any indifferent attitude due to her race but she had to face many questions when she started singing as a country musician. She says that many believe that country music is a tough genre to become a mainstream singer and to get stardom. But those questions made her feel even stronger, ‘When you tell me I can’t do something, it just makes me want to do it more,’ says Rissi to students in Atlanta.
Rissi Palmer recently sang to students in Parkside Elementary School, Atlanta. She also talked to the students about her life and her childhood days. The session was attended by some 50 students, almost all young and minors. She was singing there in an after-school program. She told the students that she grew up listening to every genre and all types of music. She told the students that her mother was a great fan of country music and the family also listened to R&B.
Though there are many black singers in the country music industry but no one has reached the height in their careers like Rissi Palmer. She first appeared in the CBS talent hunt show ‘Star Search’ and reached the finals. She was spotted by Terry Johnson, president of 1720, who offered her a record label at his company. 1720 released Rissi’s first album titled Rissi Palmer in 2007 and hence her singing career got a formal start. She is a featured star on Yahoo! Music and has also been listed in the New Now from October till November in 2007. The New Now features the talented newcomers. Her song ‘No Air, released in 2008, has been listed in the Top 50 singles on Hot Country Songs chart.
