San Diego residents experienced a loud boom and a slight shaking of the earth. San Diegans took the loud noise and shaking as another earthquake in the area. US Geological Survey immediately took to the searching the origins of the loud sound and the associated shaking felt. It was revealed that the affect has been produced as a result of supersonic air craft making it to the skies. It is not the first time that a sonic boom is mistaken as an earthquake; a similar phenomenon was observed in 2006.
However there remain some question in the minds of the people who observed the shaking and the sound, then it should have happened every time a jet flies over the San Diego area, however obviously that is not the case. Addressing the question seismologist have viewed that most probably weather conditions and the direction and speed of wind is to blame that amplified the sound to the degree that it shook the massive structures.
It is to be noted that a military air craft training center is located nearby in the Mojave Desert area.
As recently as on 4th December San Diego did experience an earthquake. The earthquake was of the 3.5 magnitude on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was located some 40 miles off San Diego.
Most of the earthquakes hitting the area have their epicenter deep in the ground preventing widespread damage.
As the memories of the previous earthquake were fresh in the minds of the people, It was easy to mistake the incident for another earthquake.
