As much as the term seems to be a fancy name of otherwise common sexual activity, the term has scientific roots. A study was published Canadian Journal of Psychiatry in 2003 referring to the condition. Sexomnia is indulging in sexual activity with oneself (masturbation) or with the partner, without one being consciously aware of it. Moreover, when one wakes up he has no recollection of incident or accident (depending on the results!).
Physical activity is common during REM sleep. REM refers to Rapid Eye Movement. There are several phases of sleep. REM sleep is characterized by the physical activity like clinching the fists, male erections and females getting vaginal lubrication. An event which falls in the category of Sexomnia is more likely during REM sleep.
Often the Sexomnic person comes to know about his habit, when his or HER partner indicates about the condition.
Psychologists have many theories about the condition but most of the authorities blame repressed desires or fantasies at work.
This is important to understand that Sexomnia IS NOT A SEXUAL DISORDER. The condition is due to excessive neurons firing in the brain. Like sleepwalking a person having Sexomnia is exhibiting behaviors that an awake person shows while engaged in sexual activity, so the person should be treated for excessive brain activity while sleeping not for having sexual abnormality. Sexomniacs are NOT Sex Maniacs.
The condition is much laughed at in social circles and the people believe the person with the condition to be faking it. Yes there may be some who would be faking it, but Sexomnia is very much real and is treatable.
