Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon has been accused of using holiday gift cards, which were issued for the needy, to do personal shopping. The news may sound like an incident which brings minor embarrassment only, but the fact is that the incident may put her political career at stake.
Sheila Dixon is accused of using holiday shopping gift cards for her personal shopping spree. She asked her wealthy partners to donate money for buying holiday gift cards for the poor and needy families. She has been accused of using these cards for her own personal shopping. Allegations include use of gift cards, worth thousands of dollars, for buying electronics, knickknacks, and clothes.
A jury will sit to hear the case and if the allegations are proved she will be thrown out of her office.
Sheila Dixon, 55, was appointed as the mayor of Baltimore in January 2007. She is Democrat. Her early years at the office as mayor won her applaud for her quick responses to the crisis and smart hires. Her selected hires like Frederick H. Bealefeld have brought strength to their departments.
Though she has refused to give an interview to the press, she has answered a couple of questions about the accusations. She says that she’s hopeful and that there’s no reason she should resign from her office. She also claims ‘tremendous support’ from the people of Baltimore. Sheila Dixon has hired a team of seven –high-priced legal experts who will help her in the case.
Some legal experts say that Dixon has the benefit of facing the jury which consists of individuals who are doubtful about the police investigations.
