Slooh is a telescope service with robotic functions. The concept behind this type of service is to give access to clients and customers online. A web browser with flash is used to access the required images of any target area. Images via email are also used for the purpose. The website has patent rights and no other can copy the process used by it. The word ‘slooh” is originated from the root “slew” which means “sliding” or “veering”. The addition of “ooh” magnifies the intensity of its literal meaning by adding joy and amazement. So the “slooh” is an innovative word that means “joyful slide” or we can also call it as “joy ride” in connotative sense. The founders of the website are Matt Bendaniel and Michael Paolucci.
The online telescope was introduced to general public in 2003 with many subsequent refinements and sophistications up till 2006. The physical lab from where actual telescope operates is in one of the Canary Islands. The purpose of choice of such a remote place is to avoid light pollution of cities which hinders light waves and clear images cannot be seen. Two types of telescope are used to process images for the website. First type of telescope is made to make “high magnification” of smaller objects like a microscope that magnifies small objects and make their details visible. Second type of telescope is constructed to approach far away objects by making it light sensitive. Slooh can be regarded as the first online telescope meant for commercial purposes.
