According to National Weather Service no less than five tornadoes touched down in the metro Denver area on Sunday afternoon 7th June, 2009, with one damaging Southlands Mall and a nearby community in Southeast Aurora, Colorado. The tornado overturned benches and a car outside Southlands Mall and injured a man who tried to take pictures of the tornado.
Aurora Fire Department Division Chief Mark Turley said that the man who was injured by the Southlands Mall Tornado was taken to the hospital, the man was seriously injured, and furthermore he said that additional details regarding the injured man cannot be released due to medical privacy laws. The Southlands Mall was forced to close due to the moderated damage and gas line leaks.
According to the “National Weather Service” the tornado which damaged the Southland Mall touched down in the South of Buckley Air Force Base at around 1:49 P.M. and took an 8 to 10 mile path across southeast Aurora, the tornado was on the ground for 30 minutes approximately.
Joyce Rocha-Brown a spokesman for the Southland Mall told the media that the tornado has damaged air conditioning units and heating, ventilation on the mall’s roof; furthermore he said that it is not decided yet that when will the building might reopen but the damage are being reviewed by the mall’s administration.
