A tragic incident has left above sixty people dead in a stampede that followed free distribution of clothes and food material. The stampede that has maimed twenty-eight people as well was triggered when one of the metal gates collapsed to the floor as masses pushed against it from the other side. The gate collapsed on a few people and caused the others to panic which caused a great upheaval in the temple where as many as ten thousand citizens had gathered to receive alms.
The total death toll of the stampede has been counted at sixty-three and the greatest tragedy of the incident is that those killed by it were only children and women. The tragic news has left many people in a state of despair and loss and families were gathered at the temple, which is located in Pratapgarh, wailing away for a loved one they may have lost. In all, thirty-seven children were killed and twenty-six ladies.
A probe into the stampede has been ordered under the directives of the Mayawati Government while members of the ministry have also made the deliberation of visiting the site to assess the exact circumstances under which the stampede was triggered. The location of the temple lies in the state of Uttar Pradesh being in the south eastern direction from the capital, New Delhi by a distance of four hundred miles which equates to roughly six hundred and fifty kilometers. The ambulances and rescuers came to the situation shortly after the incident occurred after word had spread of it.
