Stefanie Spielman dies at the age of 42. She was the wife of NFL and Ohio State star Chris Spielman. Stefanie Spielman was battling with breast cancer. She died after a long fight this Thursday. She died at her home in Upper Arlington. The first announcement of her death was made on WBNS radio in Columbus where Chris Spielman co-hosts a show as well.
Stefanie Spielman was 30-years-old when she found a lump in her breast. At that time she was three months pregnant. She later had a miscarriage. It was in 1998 when the doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer. Stefanie Spielman survived fur attack with cancer but her cancerous lump recurred. At that time her husband Chris Spielman took one-year retirement from Buffalo Bills and stayed at home to take care of his wife and children. When Stephanie went through chemotherapy and lost her hair, Chris too shaved his head. The couple started advocating breast cancer detection. They were awarded with several honors for their dedication to the cause. Stefanie Spielman and Chris Stephanie founded ‘Stephanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research’ and together raised $6 million to promote breast cancer research at Ohio State. Stefanie Spielman also helped a support group for young women suffering with breast cancer. Stefanie Spielman hosted an annual event in which honors were given to survivors of breast cancers. She also helped creating fund to support the breast cancer patients and their families. For her efforts, Stefanie Spielman was entered into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2002.
Upon her death, thousands around the world have paid tribute to her. Lance Armstrong, seven-time winner of Tour de France, says that she was a ‘living example’ who gave us the lessons of courage and strength. Jim Tressel, Ohio State football coach, called her an ‘inspiration’ for others around her. Chris Spielman commented announced her death at the WBNS radio station. ‘Stephanie has gone home to be with Lord,’ said Chris. He also said that he and his wife are thankful to those who support their efforts.
Stefanie Spielman is survived by a husband and three children.
