Storkcraft Cribs come with a mechanism that allows the front portion of the crib to move vertically up and down. The mechanism allows the parents to lower the front to lay the babies inside and then reposition and lock the front so that baby may not fall down. However some 110 reports were filed complaining that the locking mechanism failed to hold the front and the lock that keeps it at its position easily came lose. The result is that babies become trapped between the frond and the mattress or the floor of the crib. The fault has resulted in at least four reports of kids being suffocated, and 15 reports of kids being trapped.
Storkcraft Manufacturing Inc. a Canada based company on the instructions of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling all the cribs of the design. The decision effects 1213000 Storkcraft Cribs distributed in U.S and 968000 Storkcraft Cribs distributed in Canada.
Storkcraft is also freely distributing a kit that may be self installed to make the cribs safe and strengthen the locking mechanism. Parents with Storkcraft cribs in their homes are advised to immediately stop using the crib and either get them replaced or install the additional kit.
It is to be noted that the particular batch came in the markets in the fall of 1997 and remained available till 2004.
Strorkcraft Crib recall is a record and never before such a product has been recalled in such a large number.
