“For the rest of my life, I will be haunted by the horror and anguish Dylan caused.” Susan Klebold has broken her silence about the 1999 Columbine High School disaster. Susan is the mother of Dylan Klebold who undertook the shooting in the school with another student. The incident killed some 12 students and a teacher. 21 students were injured in the incident. Three students got the wounds as they tried to escape from the scene of shooting. Both Dylan and the Eric Harris then shot themselves dead. Susan’s comments are the part of an essay by herself, which is published in “O”, The Oprah Magazine. The essay discusses the anatomy of the massacre from the eyes of a parent. On the day the shooting took place Dylan Klebold seemed to be in a hurry. His mother Susan thought that he may have committed to take some class fellow along – She could not have been more wrong!
The incident proved to be the deadliest high school shooting. As she delves deeply into the reasons, she confesses that she was totally unaware of her son’s mental condition, his depression and the volcano of aggression that was ready to erupt. Dylan’s journals and writings were analyzed by the psychologists who regard him as very depressed – to the degree that he had become suicidal. According to Susan the writings Dylan left behind have broken her in her heart and mind. The shooting and the agony of the parents for example who have lost their loved ones or those whose children have become disabled has changed her point of view totally.
As the parents of the effected children have reacted to the essay, they are mostly positive about it, with many saying that they believe that Susan Klebold didn’t know how depressed and suicidal Dylan was.
