Tamaraind is one of the most common tress in Indian Subcontinent. In Hindi and Urdu languages Tamarind is translated as Imli. Tamarind fruit is extensively used to make sauces of different kinds and in meals. Tamarind candies are also popular among children. Tangy flavor of Tamarind fruit perfectly augments hot chilies, hence sauces are common that combine tamarind and chili flavors.
Tamarind tree is native of African countries, but it grew so well and so long ago in the climate of Indian subcontinent that it is often considered to be the native of India.
Tamarind fruit is full of nutrition and is a good source of iron and B-Vitamins.
Tamarind was extensively used in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is considered as a “cold” remedy – meaning that it antagonizes the conditions where body temperature rises than normal. It is very good in fevers. Tamarind is considered the remedy of choice for children who refuse to take food. It is very good for digestion and is even administered to elephants for digestion related problems!
Coming to the modern research on the otherwise an old Ayurvedic remedy, the research has proved its cardio-protective effects. It is very good to lower the blood cholesterol. It is also helpful in maintaining the normal blood sugar levels. Tamarind eye drops are remedy of choice in the case of “dry eye syndrome”.
Fluoride has its pros and cons. Fluoride is commonly mixed in drinking water to reduce dental afflictions, however too much fluoride in body disturbs the calcium metabolism. Tamarind is used with very good results to reduce Fluoride levels.
