Explosion occurred after an accident on the northbound lanes of I-75 in Hazel Park at nine Mile road around 8:30 P.M on Wednesday when a tanker that was carrying nearly 14-thousand gallons of fuel exploded. After tanker explosion the both directions of I-75 was closed for traffic. It was a firestorm on I-75 in Hazel Park, traffic on northbound was diverted onto eight and seven mile road, whereas southbound traffic from I-75 was diverted to I-696.
Hazel Park Firefighter reached on the scene within minutes after the accident occurred, however the explosion occurred nearly after 3-1/2 hours later according to reports. The flames from the inferno were blowing above 200 feet in the air.
An overpass of nine mile road over the freeway caught fire from the explosion and a section of overpass collapsed onto the northbound lanes of I-75.
According to earlier reports 4 vehicles including two semi trucks were involved in the accident, tanker and two more vehicles were completely destroyed in the incident. Police evacuated the Nine Mile and I-75 business areas, however the residential area was not being evacuated, but the residents were advised to close their windows and doors. Air quality is being monitored by the EPA officials on the scene to escape from any hazardous issues. Over 2000 customers in the neighborhood were without power on Wednesday due to the explosion according to DTE energy.
