Based on a novel that went by the same name and written by Bernard Malamud in the year 1952, “The Natural” movie was released just some thirty odd years later in the year 1984. The Natural movie has been directed by Barry Levinson and stars Robert Redford as the main character Roy Hobbs. The Natural movie is an amazing concoction of sports, romance, love and action.
The movie starts off with Roy Hobbs playing ball with his father when his father suddenly dies on the family farm. He dies under a tree that is later struck by lightning and split open. Then Roy carves a baseball bat out of the wood of the tree and marks it with a Lightning bolt and names it ‘Wonderboy.’
Many years later when Roy is nineteen he gets a chance to try out as a pitcher for the Chicago Club. On his way to Chicago he stops at a carnival, later he is challenged to get the best batsman out who is referred to as “The Whammer.” Roy accepts the challenge and gets ready to pitch. He soon strikes out the Whammer and it is written down by a sports writer who was there at the game. The sport writer played by Robert Duvall writes a complete description of the match and Roy’s performance and publishes it in the next days paper. On the train back he is seduced by a woman who goes by the name of Harriet Byrd, played by Barbara Hershey, who has seen his performance and wants to sleep with him but when they get to the hotel room she shoots Roy and jumps out the window inevitably killing herself.
The Natural movie is a wonderful movie to watch whether you’re interested in baseball, action movies or romantic ones.
