A 2001 action thriller movie “The Shaft” is also known as “Down”. Hero and heroine of the movie are James Marshall and Naomi Watts. The film kicks off with something strange happening in the Millennium Building. The building consists of hundred floors as the building gets struck by lightening the elevators of the building start operating on their own; acting as if they are aliens taking revenge from humans.
Jennifer Evans is a reporter and in her search for a thrilling story, she is covering the events in millennium Building whereas mark and Jeff are technicians sent to detect the fault in elevators. As they start checking the elevators they are unable to find any fault.
Meanwhile fatalities continue to happen. In one incident a group of pregnant women are trapped in an elevator as excessive heat is produced, two women deliver babies in the elevator, while the rest are admitted to hospital immediately. As a skater becomes victim of the rogue elevators, Evans obtains the video of the killing and explains anomalies in the time taken by the elevators to cover the distance to Mark.
In their quest they meet a researcher who is working on computer chips that are based on the brains of animals but as the project went wrong he has been fired.
In the end of the movie, it is revealed that a chip based on a large brain was installed to control the elevators and the elevators were indeed taking their own decision.
As the chip is destroyed by Mark, Steinberg is also killed.
Mark and Evans are trapped in an elevator – this time to sleep together.
