“The Tenth Circle” is Jody Picoult’s 13th book. It is also the title of 2008 movie based on Jody’s novel. The tenth circle analyses the psychology of parents in their effort to raise their children without them having to experience the childhood traumas they had to go through while they were young. Daniel Stone grew up in Alaska to have mocked up by natives. The mental anguish of being discriminated all the time resulted in a need to get out of the hell at any cost, be it drugs, stealing or robbing. As his wish to be among people of his origin came true, he found it extremely tough to let his children go their own way, forgetting that nature is biggest teacher of all. As the novel starts Daniel is also unaware of another breach in his family. His wife – a College Professor is involved with a student.
Trixie is growing up. She has an affair with a guy at school. As they broke up, Trixie’s best friend suggested that she make him jealous by giving attention to other guys at a party. The plot went wrong – very wrong. She came home to break the bomb shell that she was raped at the party by her former boyfriend. As the event comes to the attention of police, they seriously doubted the story created by Trixie. She is blamed to have taken part in the act with her own accord. Daniel has to take stand for his child, even if that means confronting the childhood demons of his own.
The Tenth Circle discusses a very delicate issue of children-parent relationship and the complexity of giving freedom while protecting the children.
