The Tingler is the title of 1959 hit horror film. The main role of Dr. Warren Chapin is played by Vincent Price. Film is about a scientist, who is researching Fear. He is interested to explore the culprit behind the shaking of the body when one feels extreme fear. In his quest Dr. Warren loses the sanctity of human life and considers all the humans, coming in contact with him just some creature to be experimented with. As he examines the autopsies, he starts building a theory. His experiments lead him to believe that shivering and trembling is produced by creatures that reside in the spines and as subject screams and cries, the creature is made inactive and thus the fear is reduced. He operates on deaf and dumb woman and kills her to prove his theory. It so happens that Dr. Warren has estranged relationships with his wife who is deceiving him. Dr. Warren decides to use his wife Martha as the subject. He murders his wife and as the worm Tingler is removed from the spine it escapes into the auditorium. Wait! the story does not end here…….
Director William Castle came up with an ingenious plan. Shaking equipment worth $250,000 was bought. The equipment basically was used in WWII to shake of the ice of the wings of the war planes. The equipment bought was fitted under the chairs of the audience. As the Tingler escapes into the audience, the screen goes black and a voice is heard “Scream” to ward off Tingler and the chairs start shaking – uncontrollably!!
