Time change due to change in seasons or, in better words, Daylight Saving Time is a phenomenon which is currently being practiced by many countries around the world. Fall 2009 has already started and it is time to take the hour-hand of the clock back to normal. Time change to original local times is scheduled to be done on November, 1. Countries like United States, United Kingdom, European Union Countries, and some South Asian countries including Pakistan practice Daylight Saving Time or DST. These countries moved their clocks one hour or more ahead at the start of summers and now since winters are arriving and days will be shorter the clocks will be moved back to the original local times.
What is Daylight Saving Time anyway?
As the name implies, Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a new time which is adopted to save daylight and hence to make more use of daylight. How do they make more use of daylight? It is simple. By moving clocks one or two hours ahead we start our day earlier and hence we do more work in the day light. For example, moving your clock one hour ahead would save you one hour of daylight as you would start your mornings earlier and hence would be able to get more daylight time. More daylight time means you start your chores early, you finish them early, and hence you end your day early. This saves money, and power consumption. In summers, by moving clocks ahead we can finish our work in early hours of the day and hence offices and businesses could be closed early. It helps you to save power consumption as more power would be needed otherwise because in the evening more power is consumed to light the offices and buildings.
Which countries are using Daylight Saving Time?
Various countries are using Daylight Saving Time. European countries were the first ones to use it. Germany, Ireland, and United Kingdom used DST during World War I to save the consumption of coal. Later, it was abandoned. After few decades, they started practicing it again. Many other European countries, including Turkey, started using Daylight Saving Time. Many American States also use Daylight Saving Time. Time changes for DST occur twice in a year in these countries; in the start of Summer and then in the start of Fall.
Those which do not use DST include Hawaii, Arizona, and Puerto Rico. Some other warm places like middle-eastern countries do not observe DST.
Time Change for Fall 2009
Almost all the countries which observe DST are changing their times to move the clocks back to normal on November 1, 2009. Some countries moved their clocks back on October, 1.
