Toyota Motor Corp. has closed the sales of 8 models in United States after reports of sticking gas pedals that could cause accidents because of automatic acceleration. Although the company is not aware if the problem has caused any accidents till now but the possibility cannot be ruled out. The suspension was inevitable and will continue till a solution is found. The suspension would halt the sale of around 23 million cars and trucks. Toyota suspends sales of the following models:
- The 2005-2010 Avalon
- The 2007-2010 Camry
- The 2007-2010 Tundra
- The 2008-2010 Sequoia
- The 2009-2010 Corolla
- The 2009-2010 RAV4
- The 2009-2010 Matrix
- The 2010 Highlander
Mike Michels the Toyota spokesman has announced that production of the suspended models will also be closed this week and they will make best efforts to restart the production, however they cannot give the exact date.
Toyota suspends sales of Camry that has achieved the rank of best seller in December 2009. Camry sales had risen by 38% from last year a total of 34000 were sold last month. The sales of Corolla and Matrix had gone up by 55% as compared to December 2008 sales.
Toyota suspends sales in the times of recession however the workers were assured that they will not loose their jobs however they can opt for vacations. The news has adversely affected the shares of Toyota that were down by 2.3% in Tokyo. The Toyota dealers hope that suspension will be temporary.
