USS Halyburton is named after William David Halyburton, Jr. he was born on October 2nd, 1924 and died on May 10th, 1945 in Canton, North Carolina he graduated from New Hanover High School situated in Wilmington, North Carolina.
During World War II he put his plans aside to prepare himself for the ministry and joined U.S Navy. Halyburton was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Battle of Okinawa. He is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was the Petty Officer during the time.

Combat readiness has earned USS Halyburton 3 Battle ‘E’ awards. On July 21, 1997 USS Halyburton was also one of the guides for USS Constitution as “Old Ironsides” celebrated her 200th birthday.
In 2008, USS Halyburton is docked on her home port at Mayport, Florida and become a part of Destroyer Squadron.
USS Halyburton once again took park in a rescue mission in April of 2009 when Maersk Alabama a United States flagged ship was being held captive by a pirate?s life boat in “Horn of Africa”.
