VDOT refers to the Virginia Department of Transportation. VDOT has announced that although economic recession has hit hard, however the budget cuts and layoffs would not affect the road clearing operation this winter. It is expected that the level of snow and affected roads would follow the previous years’ pattern and VDOT officials are certain that their efforts would not be affected due to the shortage of funds. Officials announce that they are ready for any emergency situation. VDOT officials hoped that as the jobs would be cut it would not affect the employees involved in road clearing and snow removal. VDOT has stored some 240,000 tons of salt to sprinkle on the snow and an ample supply of equipment to be used in the snow removal.
They also said that the budget allocated for the operation is enough to meet the weather conditions, however bad it gets.
However the maintenance employees actually involved in the operation over the years, advised general public to remain prepared by themselves despite all the measures taken by the VDOT officials.
The measures include remaining in the house and not going out unnecessarily. It has been advised that despite the fact that the roads are now much safer however the precautionary measures are the best tools to deal with the situation.
It is also advisable to change the schedule a bit in order to avoid getting stuck in the rush hour keeping in mind the fact that making a call to VDOT in your rage would not help the department to work faster at snow removal.
