We have not finished talking about the Verizon/Motorola Droid and yet another Droid is on the scene. This time it is Droid Eris. Presumably the popularity of Droid made Verizon to think of coming up with a lesser priced option. However this time the manufacturer is not Motorola, Droid Eris has been manufactured by Taiwan based HTC – Mobile. Before going into details, Droid Eris would definitely win in terms of the cost effectiveness. Full details of the phone are still sketchy; however it would be $100 less in the price than Motorola Droid. Verizon Droid Eris uses Google’s Android 1.5 unlike Droid which features Android 2.0. I cannot think of any reason for Android 1.5 not being able to be updated to Android 2.0 when the later becomes main stream. Not having Android 2.0 means that Verizon Droid Eris would not have GPS navigation qualities like Droid has. In terms of processor Droid clearly wins as the Verizon Droid Eris would have 528 MHz processor. Droid Eris has 5.0 megapixels camera like Droid with auto focus function. If you people have had a look at HTC’s Hero, the Droid Eris is just similar to Hero in more than one ways. The phone has “Sense” capabilities developed HTC. Droid Eris has pinch to zoom feature that has been integrated into Android 1.5. Motorola Droid does not have this feature. Obviously the phone provides access to all the Google applications available at Google store.
One of the features I am dying to check is Google Onebox – developed to compete with iTunes. Please send your feedback if you have tried Onebox on Droid phones.
